​Unit 4 - Taking a Role in Society

You need to complete a series of work on the 'Taking a Role in Society' topic.  You have to complete the following tasks to help you meet the success criteria outlined below. Incorporate the key words into your answers.

You can produce written answers on the paper provided. Alternatively, you can produce detailed timelines, storyboards, posters, collages or PowerPoint slides to prove you have met the criteria below.  These need to be submitted to your teacher by the deadline shown below.  All photos and maps included should have a caption stating what they show.

Taking a Role in Society Success Criteria
Task 1a
Identify and explain some key terms;
  • Political parties,
  • M.P’s,
  • General Election,
  • Constituency,
  • Electorate,
  • Electoral register,
  • Polling booths,
  • Opposition party,
  • Ballot paper and ballot box.

Task 1b
Describe the events in a General Election campaign and explain what happens in them. Suggestions include;
  • The Prime Minister calls and election,
  • Parliament is dissolved
  • party manifesto’s published,
  • party political broadcasts happen,
  • campaigning,
  • polling day and results declared,
  • Monarch invites a party to form a government.

Task 2a
Who is eligible to vote in elections (i.e. who can vote)?

Task 2b
How do we vote? Consider the following;
  • Polling station
  • Postal vote
  • Proxy vote

Task 2c
Explain the importance of voting.

Task 2d
Why do people choose not to vote?

Task 3a

List and describe 2 groups in the UK that need support.
You could choose from the following;
  • older people (AgeUK)
  • learning disability (Mencap)
  • homelessness (Shelter)
  • alcohol dependency (NHS Advice)
  • drug dependency (NHS Advice)
  • teen pregnancy (NHS Advice)​

Task 3b
Identify 3 forms of support that can be provided to each group.

Task 3c
Describe how specific organisations such as AgeUK and Mencap work.
